2022 Primary Election

Closed Primary State

Florida is a closed primary state. This means that for partisan contests, only voters registered with a party affiliation can vote on that party's candidates (in the event the party has more than one candidate running for an office). [Florida Statutes 101.021] The deadline to register to vote or change your party affiliation for the Primary Election is Monday, July 25th.

If I have no party affiliation - can I still vote in this election?

YES! There are many nonpartisan contests this election, so every voter will have important election contests on their ballot!

If I'm a registered Republican - why will I see Democratic contest(s) on my ballot?

This election, voters will see the exception to the closed primary rule: a Universal Primary. This happens if all candidates for an office have the same party affiliation, and the winner of the Primary Election will not face any opposition in the General Election (including no qualified write-in candidates). In this case, all registered voters can vote for the candidates for that office.

In this election, there are two Universal Primary contests: State Senator District 15 and State Representative District 44.

Can I see what will be on my ballot before I vote?

Yes - find your sample ballot here anytime. Sample ballots will also be mailed to all eligible voters in August.

Will my party affiliation affect my ballot in the General Election?

NO! In the General Election, all registered voters receive the same federal and statewide contests on their ballot, and you may vote for any candidate or question on the ballot. Voters within the same districts will receive the same contests on their ballots as well.

Why don't I see the same candidates I have seen in the past on my ballot?

After the 2020 census, redistricting was required and many voters' districts may have changed. This means that some of your elected representatives may change as well. All voters should have received a new voter information card in the mail that shows their new districts and, if applicable, new assigned polling place.

Voter information cards were mailed in early July - if you did not receive yours, please contact us.
